The Korean Tabu

20-10-2017
  • When it comes to 'gays in kpop', bloggers always make the same mistake: they write to someone who has full knowledge of Korean and Asian culture. However, this is not always explanatory since many K-Pop fans, even the older ones, do not know much about cultural issues, many only listen to the song itself. We are accustomed to the futile concepts of Western masculinity, but in Asia consequently Korea, the concepts and pattern of beauty are somewhat different, someone who is not familiar with this can simply have a very shallow understanding about the subject (this happens a lot In any post about the LGBT community).

So I decided to make this post with a different approach to other postings on the subject, explaining concepts. I hope you enjoy it, and this enlightening.

South Korea, like most Asian countries, is very conservative and traditional. A 2013 Pew survey showed that 39% of Koreans support the social acceptance of homosexuality. Since everything that is not customary of their culture is taxed as something imposed by the foreign culture. Thus, many Koreans say that homosexuality did not exist in Korea and that it was brought by foreigners. This, however, is a very loose and misleading vision, for example the Hwarang, an elite group formed by men of the Silla Dynasty, were, in poems of the time, reported to have relations among the warriors. Already in the Joseon Dynasty, the existence of the Namsadang performance group further strengthened the idea of homosexuality in Korea, where this group of young people who dressed in women and made fun of the nobles introduced themselves to villagers.  So less than 2 percent of the world's population is gay (that is, less than one in 50 people), and unfortunately, most countries' are oppressive with minoritilike be gay , blacks, etc. This is a "mask" of false moralism discrimination, oppression and ignorance is still very large and frequent in Korea, which is not surprising in a country that even women has no relevant social position.

As many try to claim that homosexuality was brought by foreigners, we can cite a case of a North Korean who has always been gay but only discovered the meaning of it after he fled North Korea.

Just because of the above situation, we can say:there has always been homosexuality in all cultures, it is simply impossible to say the opposite. Not only in Asia but many countries in Africa say the same thing, 30 countries punish homosexuality, some are light sentences, and at least 14 with death sentences, so in recent years a large migration of African gays began in America In order to escape the oppression of their home countries.

Conclusion:

Homosexuality is not a disease, nor a disorder, nor a social construction, simply, it is something as natural as any part of the body, it is born with the person. The reporter, Jang Yeong-jin, cited above is a living proof that gays are born gay regardless of creation or cis experiences, they remain gay because that's how they were born. Too bad there are ignorant people such as homophobes.
